“Best” can mean several different things. A power ranking asks which team is strongest right now. A roster-value ranking measures spending or market value. An all-time ranking needs a stable standard that works across different eras.

For this list, clubs are ordered by:

1. MLS Cup wins, because MLS Cup determines the league’s postseason champion.
2. Supporters’ Shield wins, used when clubs have the same number of MLS Cups. The Shield rewards the best regular-season record.
3. MLS Cup runner-up finishes, used when both trophy totals are level.

If clubs remain level after all three measures, they share a position. That is why Toronto and Chicago are tied rather than separated by an arbitrary opinion.

The ranking counts only MLS Cup and the Supporters’ Shield. U.S. Open Cup, Canadian Championship, Leagues Cup, Campeones Cup and Concacaf titles are meaningful trophies, but including them would create an uneven comparison. Canadian clubs cannot enter the U.S. Open Cup, U.S. clubs cannot enter the Canadian Championship, and access to international tournaments has changed over time.

Those championships were spread across 15 seasons and different coaches and rosters, giving Columbus one of the clearest cases for durable organizational success.

4. San Jose Earthquakes

5. Seattle Sounders FC
